Dispensing manager, Adrian Byrne, from Specsavers Yardley took on the Simply Health Great Birmingham Run on 14 October to support one of the store’s customers who has been left paralysed following a fall.
Adrian completed the 13.1 mile challenge to raise funds for Xander Van Der Poll, a 19-year-old medical student from Yardley who broke his back falling from a tree earlier this year.
A word form the store director
‘We want to do all we can to help Xander and his family, and so aim to raise money to help buy a specialist wheelchair,’ said Specsavers Yardley store director Dee Browning. ‘Adrian kindly took on the first fundraising challenge with the half marathon, and his efforts drew in plenty of support.’
Xander joined a wheelchair racing club, Godiva Harriers, three days after he was discharged from hospital in a bid to take part in a future Paralympics. He is determined that his injury isn’t just life changing but a journey to change lives. You can follow his blog on Instagram @six_weeks_in_bed.
