Woolwich optical experts are raising awareness of glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness among adults in the UK.
The team from Specsavers in Woolwich is highlighting the role early detection plays in treating the condition.
More about glaucoma
Glaucoma is the general term used to describe damage to the optic nerve, most commonly caused by increased pressure in the eye when fluid within the eye, called aqueous humour, is unable to drain away properly.
There is no cure for glaucoma but treatment can be very effective in controlling the progression of the disease.
A word from the store director
Michael Williams, store director at Specsavers in Woolwich, said: ‘Glaucoma can exist with no noticeable symptoms and it is thought that more than half of cases in the UK go undetected.
‘Routine eye tests include a test for glaucoma and that is why it is so important to be vigilant and make time for regular screening.’
Anyone over the age of 40 with a first degree relative who suffers from glaucoma is entitled to an NHS eye examination in-store.
