To mark Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May), Specsavers in Woolwich have undertaken training to help members of staff be better equipped to accommodate customers suffering from dementia.

Incorrect prescriptions

The training enables staff to develop a greater understanding of the debilitating nature of dementia and signs to indicate that customers may be suffering from the condition. 

Those with dementia also commonly experience problems with sight and visual perception.

Research has suggested that almost half of dementia patients in care homes wear glasses with the wrong prescription, highlighting the necessity for staff members at Specsavers to be able to understand the needs of dementia-sufferers.

'Empathetic Service'

Randip Wilkhu, Specsavers Woolwich store director said: 'The research which highlights the incorrect prescriptons is exactly the sort of reason why it's so important our staff know how best to manage customers with dementia, and provide them with the empathetic and friendly service they deserve.'
