Specsavers is supporting Wigan’s community and economic future with the creation of two new apprenticeship placements.

Rachael French, aged 17, who joins from St John Rigby College and Dave Robb, aged 20 from Wigan and Leigh College are the latest recruits to have joined the team at Specsavers in the Marketgate Shopping Centre which has a proud tradition of recruiting and nurturing apprentices.

Supporting the community

Graeme Gardner, store director at Specsavers, said: ‘We’ve been delighted to welcome Rachael and Dave on their apprenticeships and they have certainly hit the ground running.

‘We strongly believe that by investing in the town’s young workforce, we are helping to encourage a strong, stable and productive local community while offering enthusiastic and talented young people such as Rachael and Dave a great opportunity to gain invaluable experience and skills.’

A great opportunity

Learning vital work and life skills is one of the overriding aims of Specsavers apprenticeships and trainee optical advisor Rachael admits her first goal has been to gain confidence.

She said: ‘The apprenticeship is really interesting and I believe it will lead to a good career.

‘It was hard at first because I was not very confident but I’m starting to get used to it and gaining new skills. My first ambition was to learn more about new things so I am able to answer questions myself without asking others and to enjoy myself. That’s really important to me.

‘The best part so far is overcoming issues I had with speaking on the phone and just becoming more confident generally with customers and colleagues.’

Learn new skills

Her apprentice colleague Dave added that, like most young people, he’s determined to keep learning new skills and put himself on the track to a successful career. He added: ‘It’s been really enjoyable and certainly feels as though I’ve learned a lot already.

‘It’s been a versatile multifunctional role so far and I want to maintain this and move in to audiology and test hearing.

‘When interacting with customers, I really feeling like I’m helping them whilst just doing my job. I find that very rewarding.

‘The application process was just as straight forward as applying for any other job but the interviewing process was a lot simpler and I felt like I was wanted and would be a good fit. This is a fantastic opportunity.’
