Whitehaven eyecare experts are starting a dialogue about glaucoma in the community this autumn.
The team from the Whitehaven store are seeking to increase awareness of the condition, which is one of the main causes of adult blindness. In particular, they hope to highlight the importance of regular eye tests in its early detection.
What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is associated with high pressure levels inside the eye, generally caused when the eye fails to produce and drain liquid as it should.
There are four main forms of glaucoma: chronic open-angle glaucoma (the most common form), primary angle-closure glaucoma, secondary glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma. As glaucoma is normally symptomless at its onset, regular eye tests are vital to its detection.
Early diagnosis in the majority of cases means glaucoma can be managed by eye drops or surgical intervention. Yet, glaucoma remains one of the main causes of adult blindness, occurring predominantly in later life. It is estimated that 50 per cent of glaucoma cases remain undetected in the UK.
