Specsavers West Wickham are one of a number of stores taking advantage of a unique partnership with the University of Hertfordshire to offer students a pathway towards optometry.
Masters of optometry
Aisha Blaggan, a 21 year-old student in her third year of study, is currently undertaking her pre-registration year with the store as she looks to complete her Master’s programme. The reason the course is so unique is that it is the first Optometry degree with incorporation and direct involvement from the College of Optometrists.
Students are given exposure to clinical practice, while developing their competence, confidence, safety and employability in a professional optical environment.
Aisha said: ‘I’m thoroughly enjoying my degree course and, clinically, I have already learnt a huge amount in a short space of time since beginning my pre-registration this year. With the guidance and support from my supervisor, Enrica Cozza, my goal is to qualify as an optometrist.’
Specsavers West Wickham store director, Bamini Raj, said: ‘Aisha’s been a really great addition to the team and the partnership with the University of Hertfordshire is certainly bearing fruit. It’s a very innovative approach to optometry and I think it’s a very good model for other industries looking to produce talented individuals within their fields.’
