Specsavers West Bridgford is supporting local white-water canoe slalom athlete, Ewan Vernon as he bids to represent the nation at a future Olympics.
The store is sponsoring Ewan, who was crowned British Junior Champion last year, by supplying him with two sets of paddles.
A word from the store director
‘We were inspired by Ewan’s dedication and attitude so wanted to support him on his Olympic journey,’ said Specsavers West Bridgford store director, Stephen Rogers. ‘The level of commitment these young athletes display is pretty incredible and it’s admiral to see that Ewan is striving for personal excellence while appreciating the need for commercial support. All the team will enjoy following his progress.’
‘Training and racing in an elite sport like canoe slalom is extremely competitive and dynamic,’ said Ewan. ‘When racing alongside Britain's fastest athletes including Olympic champions and world-class paddlers who are all aiming to be the quickest on the river, it is essential that equipment is up to date and of a high standard.
‘I’m extremely grateful for the support that Specsavers have given me, which has allowed the purchase of two new carbon fire racing paddles to be used for the 2018/19 season and important GB selection races. Being so light and effective in the water, they allow me to be as quick as I can on the water and are an essential element to my race. It’s amazing to have a local branch offer their support and it will be a massive help as I strive for success in my kayak.’
A great talent
Ewan is part of the England Potential Squad for British Rowing and is the first reserve for the GB Junior Team. A student of the University of Nottingham, he was awarded a Sports School Scholarship Programme and trains at the National Water Sports Centre.
