Specsavers in Wells would like to wish Stephen Sykes a very Merry Christmas as he’s currently in hospital following chemotherapy treatment and a stem cell transplant.

The store has been a long-time supporter of 26-year-old Stephen, having sponsored the Pink Bra’ss concert that was held in the summer, helping to raise £3,500 for the Stephen Sykes Appeal.

Two members of the team, Pat Trott and Pam Fisher, both accomplished brass musicians, know Stephen well, having played with him in various brass bands.

Thinking of Stephen at this time of year

‘We know Stephen is going through a bit of a tough time at the moment, so we wanted to let him know we’re thinking of him,’ said Pat.

‘He’s currently in isolation in hospital following his chemo and stem cell transplant, and he’ll be staying there over the festive period while doctors wait for his immune system to start working.

'Stephen is very much in all of our thoughts and we’re all hoping the treatment is a success.’

The Stephen Sykes Appeal

A local trombone player, Stephen was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in February 2016. He’s had six different rounds of chemotherapy to date, unfortunately none of which have been successful which meant a stem cell transplant was required.

Before this could go ahead, Stephen’s cancer had to be reduced with chemotherapy but the drug required to do this wasn’t funded by the NHS. The money raised for the Stephen Sykes Appeal has allowed the transplant to go ahead.
