Specsavers in Wellington has pledged its support for a local junior kick-boxer who has her sights set on sporting success.

The team at the store first heard about six-year old Ella Starling’s martial art talent from mum Kirsty, who is a dispensing assistant in store. The junior fighter has been kickboxing since the age of four, when a local club coach suggested to her parents that she might like to try a session, and has since gone on to pick up a staggering 17 medals, 18 trophies and even a Grand Slam Championship Belt.

Most recently, Ella won the WKU German International Open in June, making her the international champion in light continuous under 25kg.

Fantastic accomplishments

Specsavers store director Martin Skehan said: ‘When we heard about Ella’s fantastic accomplishments from her mum, we were more than happy to sponsor her. She is setting a great example to children across the country that age should be no restriction when it comes to sport.’

Ella, who turns seven in August, has a busy year ahead, competing in the British Kickboxing Championships in July and European Championships in Spain in October.

‘Ella has great talent, and she deserves recognition for all her training and dedication,’ Martin added. ‘For someone so young, she has picked up a fair few awards and certainly has the potential to go a long way in kickboxing, so we look forward to continuing to support her with her progress.’
