A brave team member from Specsavers in Wellington has gone the extra mile for international eyecare charity, Vision Aid Overseas, completing a 25km Brecon Beacons challenge.

£2,000 pledge

Store director Satinder Sidhu travelled to the Brecon Beacons National Park on Saturday 3 June to take part in the Beacons Trek Fest challenge as part of ongoing support for the charity, which provides essential eyecare in some of Africa’s poorest countries.

With the help of the Specsavers team, Satinder has pledged to raise £2,000 in 2017.

‘This weekend was a real challenge, but I enjoyed every minute,’ Satinder commented. ‘The Brecon Beacons is a training ground for the SAS, so I knew it would be tough, with testing climbs and difficult terrain, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit such a beautiful part of Wales.

'The ability to raise money for a fantastic charity like Vision Aid Overseas in the process was a great bonus!’

The 25km route saw walkers summit one of the highest peaks in South Wales, Pen y Fan, as well as Cefn Cwn Llwch and the Corn Du ridge, with stunning views of the lakes and valleys below.

Making a difference

Satinder continued: ‘This is the latest in a series of fundraising activities we’ve undertaken for Vision Aid Overseas. The work that this charity does is so valuable to thousands of people across Africa.’

As part of the charity pledge, Satinder will be travelling to Sierra Leone for two weeks in November, helping to provide eyecare to people living in rural communities. Alongside training staff in the country’s developing vision centres, Satinder will be carrying out eye examinations and supplying specs to people who would otherwise have little or no access to these services.

‘We can easily take our vision for granted in a country where eyecare services are so accessible and affordable, but in places like Sierra Leone, poor eyesight can have a huge impact on quality of life.

'I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, and encourage all of our customers to visit us in store to donate and make a difference to the lives of people who really need it.’
