To mark Dementia Awareness Week, staff members from Specsavers in Walworth Road have undertaken training to enable them to better understand the needs of customers with Alzheimer’s.

Dementia Friends

The store was visited by Caroline Clipson, a representative from the Southwark Borough Dementia Action Alliance, to conduct a session educating staff members on the condition and giving them the knowledge to suitably support both customers and employees suffering from dementia.

The comprehensive training covers all aspects of dementia and discusses how it affects people in different ways. With particular relevance to Specsavers, it also describes how senses can be affected, including sight and hearing.

Ongoing support

Suraj Shah, Specsavers Walworth Road store director, said: ‘The session was a fantastic opportunity to further develop our staff’s ability to support our customers suffering from the condition.

‘We’ve learned a great deal about the work of the Dementia Action Alliance within our local area, and the qualifications that our members of staff now possess means, going forward, we can look to supplement their work within the community.’
