A woman from Walthamstow was diagnosed with a serious eye condition which was detected following an eye test at Specsavers.
And Stephanie Amoura is keen to share her experience with others to highlight the importance of having regular eye tests.
Headaches and visual problems
Stephanie had been to see her GP on a number of occasions complaining of headaches and visual problems before deciding to book an eye test at Specsavers Walthamstow in October 2016.
The ophthalmic director at Specsavers Walthamstow, Faiz Parkar, saw Stephanie that day. Faiz was so concerned by what he found when he took a picture of the back of her eye that he immediately referred her to Moorfields Eye Hospital rather than suggesting she seek a GP referral, which could have taken longer to come through.
Comparatively rare condition
The hospital diagnosed her as having papilledema, swelling of the optic nerve at the back of the eye due as a symptom of increased intracranial pressure in or around the brain.
It is a comparatively rare condition, which can often be detected by a routine eye test where other medical investigations have not identified it.
Relieved store director
Faiz said: ‘I know Stephanie has been through a shocking experience, so I am in awe of the fact that she is so keen to raise awareness of the need for regular eye tests to help others.
‘Papilledema can sometimes be difficult to detect without the equipment to be able to take a look at the back of the eye, so a GP may not always be able to pick up on it. It really highlights why a regular eye test is so important, whether you are experiencing any symptoms or not.
‘It is rare for us to find something like papilledema when we do an eye test, but regular eye tests can also help to identify other conditions such as glaucoma and diabetes, which can also affect your eyesight.
‘So, my important take home message would be that if you have not had an eye test for a while, come and see us at Specsavers Walthamstow or your local store without delay to check your vision and ensure your eyes are healthy.’
Stephanie said: ‘I am so grateful to Faiz for everything he has done for me. He has really gone above and beyond what I would have expected, on the day he first saw me and since. The condition I was diagnosed with carried a risk of sight loss, but I am pleased to say my sight has been saved. I really cannot thank Faiz and his team enough.'
Regular eye tests
‘Never in a million years would I have known how important visiting an optometrist was until this happened to me. I was suffering from headaches, blurry vision and double vision for a few years before Faiz identified the cause.’
‘I would like to urge others to have a regular eye test, whether they have symptoms or not. It might be the best thing you ever do.’
