Here at London Victoria, we know our team is amazing. But it is always nice to see one of our optometrist’s endorsed by a glossy magazine journalist!

Jonathan Whiley, Editor of Victoria Magazine, visited our store recently and was greeted by Rupen Hirani. The senior optometrist discussed eye health, in particular how to avoid eye strain caused by excessive computer usage.

Rupen's advice to office workers in Victoria?

'Follow the general rule of 20/20/20/20.' Every 20 minutes take a 20-second break, find something far to stare at 20 feet away, bring it into focus and blink 20 times properly,” says Rupen.

'We blink 80 per cent less when we use a computer screen so we have tired, dry eyes. It will help regulate that.'

Why eye examinations are paramount

Jonathan’s visit came ahead of National Eye Health Week (18-24 September), a key calendar date that reminds people to put their eye health firmly on the agenda.

'A new report published by charity Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and Specsavers shows that one in five people will live with sight loss in their lifetime despite at least half of all cases being avoidable.'

Rupen says new statistics show that every day 250 people start to lose their sight in the UK, almost six million people in the UK currently live with sight-threatening conditions yet 25 per cent of people are not having an eye test every two years as recommended by the College of Optometrists.

People ignoring eye health

What Rupen finds most worrying is that the survey shows a quarter of people (23%) are ignoring the first signs of sight loss, despite not being able to see as well in the distance or close up as they used to, and have not sought advice from an optician or medical professional.

Rupen says: 'The results show that people put their boiler before their eye health; half of UK adults have their boiler serviced once a year, over a third renew their mobile phone contract every two years, while 50 per cent of UK adults last had their eyes tested more than a year ago or never. This is a terrifying statistic.’

Rupen advises workers and residents of Victoria to book their eye examination ASAP if it’s been a while. 'Make this awareness week be your reason to put eye health top of your agenda this month.'
