When Alex Vincett took a job as an optical assistant at the Tring store in November 2015, she had no idea she’d find a new found love for the eye healthcare industry which would see her go on to become contact lens manager at the store. Here, Alex tells us why she loves working at the store, and what she has planned for the future.
How did you get into a career in optics?
I graduated from Brunel University London in 2015 where I studied history, and after I finished my course I went out to Zambia where I volunteered for three months. When I moved back home I got the job at the store as an optical assistant (OA), which I always assumed would be a temporary thing but I fell in love with the work!
You’re now contact lens manager – tell us about your career progression
I really enjoyed my job as an OA from the outset – speaking to customers is one of my favourite things about working in the store. My bosses could see that I loved the work so suggested I went on Specsavers training courses to help me develop further.
In April 2016 the contact lens manager position became available and I jumped at the chance. I’m now also training to become a dispensing optician (DO). I’m in my second year of the three-year course and I’m hoping to become fully qualified next summer.
What do you hope to achieve in the future?
Aside from passing my DO exams, I’d really like to return to Zambia and practice what I’ve learned in my career out there. When I volunteered there I helped to educate locals on sexual health, so it would be amazing to go back and teach them about the importance of eye health too. I am really keen to continue working with charities, and international development is something I’m passionate about.
What would you say to anyone thinking about a career at Specsavers?
My career at Specsavers has been amazing so far – I can’t recommend it highly enough. I love the variety of the work because you never know who is going to walk through the door, so every day is different. I’ve had great opportunities here and I’m keen to keep developing, and the support I’ve been given has been brilliant.
