Two members of staff from Specsavers in Telford are encouraging young people in the local area to consider a career in optics having recently completed a year-long apprenticeship programme.

Gaining valuable experience

Jake Bullock and Amy Jones, both 18-years-old, qualified after training with the team and are hoping to encourage others like them to think about working in the optical industry.

Clinical assistant Jake said: ‘My apprenticeship has been a great way for me to gain valuable experience at a young age. I’ve been given the opportunity to help customers in a variety of situations and work with a great team of colleagues. I think it’s so important for young people to know about the value of apprenticeships as they open the door to full time work while getting a qualification.’

Admin assistant Amy commented: ‘I decided to do an apprenticeship because I could gain a great qualification whilst working with the public and a great team. Staff make a big difference to a working environment and everyone here at Specsavers makes it a great place to work.

'This apprenticeship has been a great start to my career and I’m hoping to move into the contact lens side of the business in the future.’

Apprenticeships at Specsavers are open to anyone over the age of 16 and require no previous optical experience. The scheme has been running for more than three years and 90% of the apprentices take on full-time positions within the company.

Unlocking potential

Store director Rizwaan Makda added: ‘We’re delighted that Jake and Amy have successfully completed their apprenticeships. It has been a pleasure to see them develop their skills and they have fantastic ambitions for their futures at Specsavers. Apprenticeships are a great alternative to university, allowing young people to unlock their full potential in a supportive environment.

‘We’re always keen to support future talent here in Telford, and are currently looking for someone to join our team as a lab apprentice.

'I’d like to encourage young people in the local area who are interested in apprenticeships to get in touch, either by giving us a call or applying with a CV in store.’
