Specsavers in Syston is on a mission to reduce contact lens waste by launching a contact lens recycling scheme in store.
The team on Melton Road has introduced the recycling programme, which allows customers to drop off their used contact lens pots, pods, packaging and even the lenses themselves into store, for both monthly reusable and daily disposable contact lenses.
‘We were shocked when we found out that most of the debris from contact lens use is not recycled when disposed of in general recycled household waste,’ explained store director Hina Popat. ‘There’s no need for this, as all of the materials used can easily be recycled. We thought we’d give users in the community a helping hand by accepting used contact lenses, foil, pods and monthly contact lens cases.
‘Ethical waste disposal is a big global issue at the moment, and we’re hoping that a simple change like this will go towards reducing an ever-growing plastic excess.’
The free recycling programme is offered by TerraCycle, a global ethical scheme to help collect and recycle hard-to-recycle waste, to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfills and incinerators each month.
