Specsavers in Stourbridge is supporting No Smoking Day this year to support customers who want to give up smoking, as part of its commitment as a Healthy Living Optician.
The team is informing customers about the potential damage smoking and the use of e-cigarettes can cause to their eyes. The store became an accredited Healthy Living Optician in January and now provides extra services to customers, including smoking cessation.
‘We can provide customers with support and advice on quitting smoking, which is really useful for those looking to give up the cigarettes this No Smoking Day,’ said Jason Bridgewater, store director. ‘Many people have trouble quitting smoking, so it really helps to have somebody there to support you along the way.’
Traditionally tobacco smokers remain most at risk of developing an eye condition known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), while research indicates that e-cigarette users can develop eye irritation in the form of dry eye.
Jason added: ‘This No Smoking Day we’re urging smokers to use the day as an incentive to give up and make an appointment for an eye examination or stop smoking advice, which we offer as part of the Healthy Living Optician scheme.’
Alternatively, customers can call the NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 0224 332 to speak to an advisor on quitting smoking.
