A St Austell woman has been chosen out of hundreds of people across the South West of England as a regional finalist for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year.

Best glasses 'selfie'

Amy Wray, aged 21 from St Austell could win £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas if she wins, as well as a trip to London, complete with styling and a personal shopping trip.

Glasses wearers were encouraged by Specsavers stores across the country to submit a picture of themselves donning their best pair of specs.

Amy was invited to visit her local Specsavers store in St Austell to receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £150 glasses voucher.

Amy Wray, South West England regional finalist for Spectacle Wearer of the YearProud to wear glasses

Amy says: ‘I’ve been wearing glasses on and off since I was 15.

‘People at school always used to tell me they weren’t cool and I watched people get bullied for wearing them, comments like “four eyes” so I was always reluctant to wear them! It does upset you and it made me scared to wear them in public, making my eyes worse over the years, then I realised that I needed them and I just had to get over it.

‘Now I love my glasses and I am proud to wear them, I use them for fashion too! I love encouraging others to be confident in their glasses regardless off anyone else. I want to help people through what I went through and encourage people to love glasses just as much as me. I was previously a finalist for Miss London 2014 and won Miss London popularity, raising £1,987.00 for charity in 3 weeks. It means a lot to me to be an inspiration to young girls to help them and I would love to do this on a much bigger scale.’

Exciting opportunity

Specsavers St Austell store director Eric A Barkhuysen says: ‘It’s brilliant that one of St Austell’s own has been selected for such an exciting opportunity.

‘We just want to congratulate Amy and wish her good luck in getting through to the final.’

Awards ceremony

The awards were launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year, who Amy could meet at the awards ceremony if she triumphs in her age category.

There are four age categories – 16-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+, plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. The awards will be held at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 7 October. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.

The ultimate Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner will receive £10,000, plus a week’s holiday for two in the Bahamas courtesy of the Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort and a wardrobe of specs to suit every style.
