Southend locals Joshal Patel and Becky Kemp have recently passed their exams to become the newest fully-qualified members of the Specsavers Southend team.

Joshal, aged 22, studied optometry at the University of Plymouth and decided to start working at the Southend store between the second and third year of his course, as part of the Specsavers Summer Placement programme.

Once he graduated in 2015 he began his pre-registration year at the opticians.

Expanding his skillset

Joshal, who qualified in August of this year, said: ‘It feels so great to have qualified. I’m really interested in expanding my skillset and building my experience, so I’ve been looking into applying for further accreditations and continuing my learning.’

Southend born and bred Becky has been working in optics since 1999. The 37-year-old began working as a receptionist when she was 19 before becoming a technician in 2005.

She began the dispensing optician’s course through a distance learning programme with Canterbury Christchurch University and started working for Specsavers in Southend in 2015, to help her gain the experience and expertise she needed.

Giving people a better quality of life

Becky also graduated in August. She said: ‘Ever since I started working in optics, it’s been a dream of mine to become a dispensing optician.

'I’m so glad that I’ve managed to get round to doing the course and reaching my goal. I feel like I am now able to really help people and give them a better quality of life. I’m planning on starting the low-vision honours course to further help people.’
