Several years of fundraising by Specsavers in Solihull has paid off as young customer Katie Chamley enjoys her new garden play area.
The store has been supporting the charity Children Today over the past 10 years, specifically fundraising to support 10-year-old Katie, who suffers from tuberous sclerosis. This rare condition means that Katie has learning difficulties and communication challenges.
The efforts of the team, which included donating all the takings from one day to the charity (with staff working for free), raffles and dress down days, raised more than £3,000. The funds have helped transform the family’s garden; providing a summerhouse, trampoline and swings.
‘We are so grateful for all the support from Specsavers,’ said Katie’s mum Anna. ‘Katie loves her wonderful summerhouse, we’ve kitted it out with fairy lights and other sensory accessories so she can relax and enjoy her own space or quality time with her sister Alice. The swings and trampoline are also a big hit and give her that all important fun time.’
Children Today provides special equipment for children and young people with disabilities throughout the UK. Their aim is to ensure that every disabled child and young person fulfils their potential and leads an active childhood. Visit www.childrentoday.org.uk for more information.
