Practice manager and dispensing optician Deepak Jhalli is currently training to become a contact lens optician, in the Specsavers Slough team. Read on to find out more about Deepak and the store.
What does your job involve?
The day-to-day running of the store including staff rotas, hiring new members of the team, and dealing with the some aspects of the finances. I also take a keen interest in the technical side of the business including glazing and making specs and will be training to be contact lens optician in September.
Can you tell us a bit more about your progression within the store?
I started as a complete newbie to optics in 2008 and, after taking a break from education, qualified as a dispensing optician in 2014.
Were you born in Slough?
Born and raised here – we have a fantastic community here.
How did you come to get the job at the Specsavers store?
My friend was a dispensing optician at the time and suggested that I apply for the job. He’d always said how there was so much room for career progression and training opportunities so I went for it and here I am.
How long have you worked at the Slough store?
Ten years in January – the time has flown by.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Dispensing is my passion and always will be. I’m moving into the contact lens sector as my interest in it has evolved over time. I used to wear contacts so understand how important they are.
Have you organised any training courses?
I’ve recently completed my Institute for Leadership Management Level 2 and want to progress to Level 3 once my contact lens course is complete.
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
Sport is another passion of mine. I took part in the interdivisional golf tournament last year and love to play football and badminton as well.
