Rebecca Burgess took on her first role in the optical world when she was 16. Now, at the age of 30, she is ophthalmic director of Specsavers in Shepherds Bush.

A life in optics

Rebecca, from Leigh (near Manchester), fell in love with the industry when she worked in optics as a Saturday girl. She went on to study optometry at university and joined Specsavers 8 years ago.

She said: ‘I was attracted to Specsavers initially because of their commitment to making eyecare affordable. A pair of glasses can dramatically improve a person’s quality of life and should be available to everyone, regardless of their income.’

Working life

Rebecca strives to make a difference in people’s live; whether they are new or returning patients.

She added: ‘For me, the real reward comes from knowing I’ve helped. I make it clear my door is always open, and building trusted relationships with existing patients is something I’m extremely proud of.’

Outside the testing room

In her personal time, Rebecca enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends. She is a keen skier and enjoys travelling, having visited countries including Bolivia, Peru, Kenya and Zanzibar.
