Specsavers in Scunthorpe is investing in its hearcare offering and expanding its team.

Since launching hearcare services in 2006 with just one registered hearing audiologist, Specsavers in Scunthorpe has responded to rising demand and the team has grown accordingly.

Olly Sykes, a former member of the optical team, has completed a two year training course and has now crossed over to hearcare as the store’s second registered hearing audiologist. Josh Mortimer will soon follow in Olly’s footsteps, and is currently enrolled on an intense 12-18 month training programme.

Championing hearcare on the shop floor are Lesley Moody and Mickey Corbett. Lesley and Mickey play a vital role in helping people understand the Specsavers hearcare offering and encouraging them to seek advice from the audiologists.

About hearing loss

Hearing loss affects one in six adults in the UK. It happens gradually so those affected might not notice at first. Most customers who visit the hearcare team have come under pressure from family members who’ve noticed that they increasingly fail to join in the conversation, have the TV on too loud or appear not to be listening.

A word from the director

Andrew Mortimer, store director at Scunthorpe Specsavers, commented: ‘We’ve now got over three and a half thousand customers on the books for hearcare. Hearing loss really does affect people of all ages – our youngest customers are in their early 30s and our oldest is 99.

‘Since the launch of our hearcare offering five years ago it’s really taken off. I realised there was a gap on the high street in Scunthorpe for easily accessible hearcare and given the demographic of our existing customer base, saw the opportunity for us to occupy that niche.’

Providing a much-needed service

Shane Bell is the lead audiologist at Specsavers in Scunthorpe and is the founding member of the hearcare team. Shane commented: ‘I have really enjoyed working in hearcare and providing what is obviously a much-needed service to the local community here.

‘It’s been great to be at the forefront of technology for the past few year, watching the industry evolve and being able to offer products to suit all lifestyles and budgets. In our experience, there is a definite preference for the smallest, most discreet hearing aids and we’ve got some great products on offer from leading brands.

‘We’ve got an exceptional team here in Scunthorpe and we’ve been able to help thousands of local people. Everyone in store is looking forward to a bright future on the hearcare and we hope to be able to grow even more in the coming years.’

Free hearing tests at Specsavers

Specsavers hearing tests are free and take about an hour, during which customers are asked about their experiences and have their ears examined. Customer who require hearing aids can be tested and fitted on the same day and could be hearing better from day one.
