Business guru and Specsavers co-founder, Dame Mary Perkins, made a guest appearance on Tuesday 31 January at Romford Specsavers, to help celebrate thirty successful years of trading in the town.
The directors that lie at the heart of the store
Romford was Specsavers’ 21st store and has trained hundreds of staff and welcomed thousands of customers through the doors since it opened.
However, it is the directors that lie at the heart of this Specsavers store.
On the first day of opening on July 22, 1986, store director Kevan Green arrived to discover the shop front had not yet been mounted. He was due to open at 9am that day and by 10am Kevan was queasy with nerves and worry.
His father turned up later that morning and offered him his tie saying, ‘this is my lucky tie; it’s never let me down.’ Kevan took the tie and by the end of his first day of trading, the store had seen success with several of their very first clients seen through the door. The rest is history.
Through the years he has been joined by fellow directors Andrew Aiston and Bhavi Mistry and on April 16, 2008, the business expanded to offer audiology services, appointing Anita Ramdoss as the hearing director.
The day gave the store the chance to celebrate their achievements and thank customers both old and new, with staff offering deals for new customers, along with an abundance of other in-store treats.
This included a furry friend from charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, which is also celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The charity’s community fundraising manager Rachel Clarke and recipient Jean Wells, brought along Jean’s hearing dog Rosie. She is specially trained to transform the lives of deaf people such as Jean by alerting them to sounds and allowing them greater independence.”
Speaking about the birthday event, store director Kevan Green added: ‘It’s been terrific to have Andrew & Bhavi contribute so many new ideas to allow continuous improvement of our clinical standards and client care. Together we have massively invested to almost double our clinic capacity and upgrade testing and dispensing equipment. It was lovely to have Dame Mary with us to mark this milestone and relaunch us into our next 30 years of serving the community.’
