With the launch of Dementia Awareness Week (15 – 21 May), Specsavers in Richmond is helping customers suffering from the condition by training up as Dementia Friends.
The initiative, set up by the Alzheimer’s Society, involves staff taking part in video and practical training exercises to learn about all aspects of dementia, and turning this understanding into positive action.
Staff at the store who have qualified as Dementia Friends include dispensing assistants Debora Da Cruz and Claudia D'Ambrosio (pictured). They have now been issued with badges to help customers identify them as a Dementia Friend in store.
Lee Penfold, store director at Specsavers Richmond, says: ‘Most of the team have already completed the Dementia Friends course and we’re now looking to get every member of staff qualified.
‘Through the training, we now have a greater understanding of dementia and are using this to improve the level of care we offer to our customers.’
