Shane Parker, an optical assistant at the Rayleigh Specsavers store, is the first team member to qualify as a Dementia Friend.
A Dementia Friend, which is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative, helps staff to develop an understanding of dementia and support customers and employees who are affected by the condition.
Shane, who qualified last year, said: ‘Having a good understanding of dementia is incredibly important and has really helped me to support customers who suffer from the condition.
‘It’s shown me that while performing my everyday duties it’s equally as important to take a little extra time to support and care for customers.
‘I’m the first person to qualify at the Rayleigh store, but we’re aiming for the whole team to be qualified by the end of April.’
Learn online Dementia Friends is a qualification that is completed online and entails watching a series of scenario-based videos.
