What started as a six-week work placement has become a full-time career for one Specsavers Pontypridd staff member.
Alex Williams, 22, from Cardiff, is celebrating his two-year anniversary at the Taff Street store, having joined the opticians as a six-week WorkFit Wales placement in August 2015.
WorkFit Wales supports young people with Down’s syndrome, helping them gain access to work opportunities.
Part of the team
As an administrative assistant, Mr Williams books appointments, files customers’ records, and more. He works alongside optical assistant, Avril.
‘Alex is part of the team, now,’ said Avril. ‘He picked everything up really quickly and has become a friend to many of his colleagues in store, myself included.’
Store commitment to staff development
Due to the positive impact Mr Williams made on the team, he was kept on after his six week placement.
Store manager, Emma Davies, said: ‘It’s always a pleasure working with Alex. He works incredibly hard and we’re really pleased with his professional development.
‘Alex has become an integral member of our team. He’s punctual, enthusiastic about the care we provide and a motivating force within the team. He’s also very knowledgeable about the range of optical and audiology services we provide too.
‘We are committed to developing all of our staff members’ skills, but we can only be successful if they are receptive to learning new things. Alex has been from day one.’
