A Pontypridd woman has reached the regional finals of this year’s Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

Katherine Booker, 35, has been named a Welsh regional finalist within her age category and is in with a chance of winning the main prize - a £1,000 voucher for Specsavers and £10,000 cash.

The care support worker, who also works part-time at a tattoo studio and volunteers on a local radio station, entered the competition online after learning that, for each entry, Specsavers was donating £1 to anti-bullying charity Kidscape.

Raising money for ‘wonderful cause’

‘I happened to stumble across the competition online and when I saw that money was being raised for such a wonderful cause, I knew I had to enter,’ says Ms Booker, who had her first pair of glasses at the age of 13.

‘I remember how excited I was when I was prescribed my first pair of glasses and now I have six or seven pairs at home. Usually, I choose a pair that I know will go with my outfit, as they’ve become part of my style now.’

To mark her achievement so far, she was presented with a certificate, a bottle of champagne, and £150 to spend in the Pontypridd store. Winners of five age categories will be announced at a celebrity-studded awards ceremony in London on 10 October, and will also enjoy a VIP makeover.

Good luck in competition

Store manager, Emma Davies, says: ‘We’re thrilled to have had so many entries in our region. Not only does the money go to a vital cause, but it’s been fantastic to see just how many people enjoy wearing their glasses.

‘Katherine looks absolutely fantastic in her frames. On behalf of the whole team at Specsavers Pontypridd, I wish Katherine the best of luck in the competition and hope she makes it to the finals in London.’

For each entry made £1 has been donated to anti-bullying charity Kidscape to provide training, support and advice for children, parents, schools and those who may be affected by cases of bullying and abuse in the UK.
