A local woman has been named a regional finalist in Specsavers’ annual search for its Spectacle Wearer of the Year and could win £10,000 in cash.
49-year-old retail assistant Massarat Younus from Peterborough has beaten off thousands in the East of England to become a regional finalist in the 45-59 age category. If Massarat makes it through, she could follow in the footsteps of last year’s Award winner, Love Island hunk Alex Miller, winning £10,000 and the chance to mingle with celebrities at the annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards in October.
Massarat, who has been wearing glasses since the age of 12, said: ‘I only really entered the competition as a bit of fun with my kids. We were sitting on the sofa when the advert came up and I said: "wouldn’t it be funny to try this”. We all laughed as I sent in my selfie. I was so shocked to be picked as a regional semi-finalist, but I’m so happy.’
Massarat popped into Specsavers on Bridge Street in Peterborough to meet store director, Steve Emmingham, who presented her with her regional finalist certificate and a £125 eyewear voucher to spend in store.
‘I love wearing my glasses’
Massarat continued: ‘I always take a lot of time and effort to choose a pair of glasses. I think about whether they would go with outfits I have, what they would look like with my hair up or down and things like that. When I was younger there were only two choices and normally just big pink ones. Now there’s such a variety, with so many styles – wearing specs is fashionable. I love wearing my glasses now.’
To help her choose her new pair of specs, optical assistant Paul invited Massarat, to try out Frame Styler. This exciting new technology helps customers find the perfect pair of frames by using facial analysis to scan face shape and features. The end result is a list of the right styles and colours that have been identified to perfectly suit the individual.
‘A very worthy finalist’
Store director of Specsavers in Peterborough and Serpentine Green, Steve Emmingham said: ‘We all know Massarat at the store. She’s a lovely lady who always takes time to think about her specs. A very worthy finalist and we wish her all the best of luck in the competition.’
When asked what advice she would give to a new specs wearer, Massarat said: ‘When you are choosing your glasses, make sure you’re comfortable in them and if you’re not sure, I would say maybe ask the staff for advice and use the Frame Styler to help you find the pair that’s right for you.’
