Staff at a Paisley opticians have marked Guide Dogs Week (4 – 12 October) with a series of events which have raised £225 for the charity Guide Dogs Scotland.

As part of the celebrations, three guide dogs in training visited the store.

The Labrador puppies named Clover, Newton and Macaulay met staff and customers during a recent fundraising day to highlight the awareness week.

As well as providing customers with the chance to meet some of the charity’s puppies and learn about the vital work of Guide Dogs Scotland, the store visit forms part of the training process by familiarising the puppies with busy public environments they will likely encounter as a fully-trained guide dogs.

Fantastic fundraising
The store’s staff also organised a bake sale, held donation collections throughout Guide Dogs Week and also bolstered its total through staff dress down days and a tombola stand.

One of the store’s directors also donated £1 for every member of staff at the Paisley opticians, adding a further £34 to the total.

Gail Thompson, director at Specsavers Paisley, says: ‘Everyone at the store has really enjoyed our fundraising events, especially meeting our four-legged visitors, who received lots of attention from our customers.

‘Guide Dogs Scotland is a charity we have long supported and a very worthy cause. I’m proud of our staff for the delicious bake sale and fantastic tombola they organised and pleased to have a healthy total to hand over.’

Worthwhile cause
Guide Dogs Scotland provides blind or partially sighted people with a guide dog to help greatly improve their quality of living. Money raised for the charity not only helps to train future guide dogs like Clover, Newton and Macaulay, but also works closely with the new owners and provides them with all the essential items they will need and financial assistance to cover food and veterinary bills.

Guide Dogs Week is the charity’s annual event to raise awareness of its great work by encouraging people to ‘Stand Out for Guide Dogs’ by wearing yellow – the colour of a guide dog’s harness.
