Specsavers Omagh recently helped an enthusiastic group of technology AS students at Sacred Heart College to compete in the 2016 prestigious Big Band Young Scientists Fair in Birmingham as the only NI representative in their category.

Car nicknamed ‘Visionplus’

The ‘Dream Team’ as the students called themselves had come together at break, lunchtimes and after school to design and create a self- build electric car, lovingly called VisionPlus and store directors Emma Finn and Donna Harbison backed the school by providing cash and team t shirts to help with their three day trip to Birmingham.

The team who have been together since third year have also won past awards - at Goodwood in 2014 in the Greenpower International where they won Best Presented Team and also Best Engineered Car.

Building for the future

The students not only learned building and creative skills in terms of manufacturing but also business presentation and communication skills as they had to present to a tough panel of judges over in Birmingham and were competing alongside thousands of young people from all over GB and NI. Whilst the team didn’t pick up a top award, reaching the finals for the first time ever was a huge achievement and the school and technology teacher Mark Deehan were delighted with the learning experience and the sponsorship they received from the team at Specsavers Omagh.
