Tell us a bit about yourself
I am Paul Stanway the retail director, I am married with three children, and most of my time outside of work is taken up with them, either standing on the edge of a Rugby pitch or driving the “taxi”!
How did you come to work at Specsavers in Old Swan?
I'm a career retailer having worked for Sainsbury's, B&Q, M&S and Lloyds Pharmacy before coming to own a Specsavers store. I was looking for an opportunity to work for myself, and the Specsavers model of Joint Venture Partnership provided me with that.
I joined in 2010, and spent around two years learning about the world of optometry, before buying a share of Norris Green Specsavers in 2012, and then Old Swan along with my Ophthalmic Partner Lyndsey McLoughlin in spring 2016.
Do you wear specs, and if so, what is your favourite style?
I do now wear varifocals, and quite often choose rimless or at least a half frame pair.
Which frames are the most popular with customers at the moment (a chance to mention the top ranges)
It usually our latest ranges, so My Little Pony for children at the moment, and Superdry, and Nicole Farhi for the adults....although we're getting Balmain in November which is creating quite a stir.
What does your job at Specsavers Opticians involve?
I look after the operation outside of the testroom, and help to lead and develop the team.
How long have you been with the company?
Since November 2010.
What is the best part of your role?
I love seeing people develop.
Everyday it's something different, the industry is changing so rapidly, so one day I could be deciding on how we afford the latest equipment, or getting my head around a new service like the soon to launch post-Cataract service.
Why is it so important to get your eyes checked regularly?
Because it's not just about glasses, it's about the health of your eyes and 50% of sight loss is preventable according to the RNIB if the issues that cause it are picked up early enough
Do you provide hear care at the store?
Yes we hold 3-4 clinics per week and the team are all trained to do minor repairs across 7 days per week.
What additional services do you provide at the store
Glaucoma B and from January 2018 hopefully Post Cataract Assessment. We also offer private minor eye care service that cost the same as a private eye test.
