Specsavers in Northwich has raised more than £1,400 for Sport Relief in a combined effort by all of the staff to push themselves to the limit by biking more than 160 miles.

The Northwich store director Salma Kamaluddin put together a team of five novice cyclists, some of whom had never even got on a bike until September last year. The team set up an exercise bike in the store and tackled the high mileage by taking it in turns to complete the 50 miles and raise £1,000 for Sport Relief.

Biking towards an amazing charity total

Spurred on by their colleagues’ ambition and drive, other members of staff cycled a further 175km and raised another £140 over the course of the weekend. The staff at the Northwich store were sponsored by customers, family and friends to complete the task.

And Hari Notay, a director at the store, took the fundraising even further by biking outside with her husband and two twin children, Arthur and India, aged seven, to raise £330 and cycling another three miles for the cause.

A real team effort

Store assistant manager, Linda Shaw said: ‘Some of our staff are gym bods whereas others are really not, but everyone was keen to put a shift in on the bike to make sure we reached our target. Our team here always really pulls together when it is needed and at events like this, it’s great to witness this sort of camaraderie make such a difference.’

How their fundraising will help Sports Relief

Sport Relief is a charity event from Comic Relief in association with BBC Sport, which brings together the worlds of sports and entertainment to raise money to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world’s poorest countries.

Members of the public take on a sporting activity of their choice to join in with the fundraising. This year’s nationwide event broke last year’s effort by scooping a massive national total of £51.2m on its first night alone. Organisers are still receiving donations, with the final amount yet to be announced.

Salma Kamaluddin, store director at Specsavers in Northwich said: ‘It was a great honour to be part of the nation’s combined effort to raise money for vulnerable people across the globe who are in need. I am really proud of the staff at the store and families for helping us hit such an impressive target too.’
