Specsavers in North Shields is celebrating success after an employee gained a Foundation Degree in Sciences to become a fully qualified dispensing optician.
Louise Thompson continued to work full-time in the store while studying for her degree. The 27-year-old started working in the store after she left school and took the opportunity to gain her qualification through Specsavers.
A word from Louise
Louise said: ‘I joined Specsavers when I was just 18 and I felt now was the right time to take advantage of the fantastic further education opportunities working here offers.
‘I attended Anglia University for three days every quarter as part of my studies and completed the rest in my spare time. Continuing to work full-time while studying was challenging, but the support of my director and the rest of my colleagues really helped me to keep going.
Learning from the best
‘One of the optometrists from the store was appointed to be my tutor and I got an hour every week to spend learning from him. ‘Learning on the job was easier than just sitting in a classroom and I loved being able to apply my knowledge to my day-to-day job immediately.
‘Specsavers offers a range of further education opportunities and I would definitely recommend the company to others. I’d like to thanks all of my team for their continued support and guidance over the last three years.’
A word from the director
Edward O’Gara, store director at Specsavers in North Shields, said: ‘Louise has worked extremely hard for the past three years to achieve this qualification.
‘Working full-time and studying is definitely challenging but Louise remained professional and gave 100 per cent to both at all times. ‘We are all looking forward to seeing Louise develop further within the company.’
