Carol Orr, store manager at Specsavers opticians in Newtownards has recently graduated from Nottingham University with a Certificate 4 level in Ophthalmic Dispensing. The recent qualification brings even more experience to the store, and Carol’s achievement goes to show we’re never too old to learn something new, as she graduated at the age of 53.
Carol explained: ’Ever since I joined the team at Specsavers Newtownards, I have been encouraged to widen my experience and broaden my training, we all have. It can be a huge task to take on, but I have found that I love learning all the new practices which lead to bettering the experience our store can offer. I have had so much support from the store director, Leigh Nelson, and my colleagues who have studied with me and encouraged me to continue to learn and train’.
Carol has been part of the team at Specsavers Newtownards for 16 years, starting as a trainee dispensing assistant, progressing within the internal training programmes towards a dispensing sssistant role. After successfully completing a six month Cert 3 level in Ophthalmic Dispensing, Carol continued her learning through training and regional seminars, and became an in-store trainer before successfully applying for the store manager position.
Well-known, friendly face
Leigh Nelson, Newtownards store director said: ‘Carol is a well-known face around the town, and has taken great care of our customers over the years. She was our first Hearcare champion, introducing that service to our store and is constantly involved in our charitable initiatives, raising thousands of pounds for many local organisations. We’re very proud.’
