A dispensing optician at the Austin Friars store in Newport has celebrated a year of awards success for his outstanding care of people with age-related vision loss.
Exceptional commitment and support
Russell Ham most recently scooped the Optician of the Year award at the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence, which took place in London.
He was nominated by Newport customers for his commitment to their care and the exceptional support he offered to those with macular degeneration, a painless eye condition that can cause people to lose central vision in both eyes.
Russell said: ‘I can’t stress enough how important it is to get regular eye tests, which can catch conditions such as this.
‘There’s fantastic treatment available that slows the process of macular degeneration if it’s caught early enough, which is why it’s essential people have their eyes checked regularly.
‘I’m very grateful to all of the customers who took the time to nominate me. Knowing your customers have put your name forward makes winning all the more special.’
Hat-trick of success
Russell is no stranger to accolades, being the only optician in Wales to receive a ‘five-star award’ from the Wales Council for the Blind, back in May this year.
He was also one of only three people shortlisted for ‘Health Care Professional of the Year’ at the South Wales Argus Health and Care Awards, which celebrated excellent levels of patient care across healthcare.
Store director, Craig MacKenzie, said: ‘We’re so proud of Russell for his recent win and continued success. Our staff continuously go above and beyond to provide patients with the best care possible, and he is a fantastic example of that dedication and professionalism.’
