Store manager at Specsavers in Newmarket, Tom Seljamae, is celebrating his 10 year anniversary with the local opticians this year.
The 29-year-old, who is originally from Burwell, joined the store after leaving Soham Village College and working for a local supermarket. He was informed by his sister Maili that there were job vacancies at the store and they both joined the team together. Maili is now a qualified dispensing optician and has started training to become an optometrist.
Tom first worked as an optical assistant in 2008, before beginning work as a lab technician a year later. He was quickly promoted to lab manager in 2010 and then duty manager by 2011, helping more with customers. In 2013 Tom became the store manager and began the Pathway course – a Specsavers course which leads to the qualification needed to become a director of one’s own store.
‘I really love the variety’
Tom said: ‘I really love the variety this job offers. Every day is different and it certainly keeps me on my toes. I’m learning something every single day, which I know is giving me the experience I need for when the opportunity arrives, to buy into my own store.’
In his spare time Tom enjoys spending time with his wife Jo, who he met at Specsavers, and their little boy, one-year-old Harry.
