A Potteries optician has given up his holiday to help the people of Moldova with free eye care.
Ryan Burke from our store in Newcastle under Lyme, travelled with former students at Cardiff University to the Eastern European country in order to help those unable to afford proper eye care.
The trip involved visiting villages and towns across Moldova to provide eye tests to more than 1500 people and giving out 2000 free pairs of glasses.
Self-funded the trip
Ryan, aged 23, booked the time off using his holiday dates and self-funded the trip.
He said: ‘My friend needed another supervisor on the trip so reached out to me. I was shocked to find that in most cases, people were literally blind, so our work was very important’.
Newcastle under Lyme store manager Debra Fitzsimmons said, ‘We are really proud of Ryan and have enjoyed hearing all of the stories about his trip’.
