Three of Newcastle’s proudest glasses wearers are a step closer to winning the coveted Spectacle Wearer of the Year Award, with a grand prize of £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas.
Joanna Paolozzi Wood, Glenis Graham and Tq Li from Newcastle were chosen from hundreds of entries from across the North East.
The Oscars of the glasses world
Known as the Oscars of the glasses world, the awards celebrate specs wearers from the UK and Republic of Ireland, across four age categories: 15-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+.
The awards were launched by Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh earlier this year, who Joanna, Glenis and Tq could meet at the awards ceremony if they triumph in their age category.
Rachel Aitken, store director at Specsavers in Newcastle, says: ‘We are delighted that our store has three contestants in the running for the final prize.
‘SWOTY is a great competition and really makes people proud to wear their glasses. I don’t think glasses have the same stigma attached to them as they did years ago, but it is still important to encourage people to wear them with pride.
‘I would like to wish all three of the lovely ladies the best of luck.’ The awards will be held at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on
Tuesday 7 October. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
