Optical assistant, Hannah Mills, is currently undertaking her summer placement at the Specsavers store in Newbury and will be returning later next year to begin her career in optics. Read on to find out more about Hannah and the store.
What do you do in-store on a day-to-day basis?
'I welcome most of the patients into the store, pre-screen them ahead of their consultation and help with the dispensing and adjusting of frames.'
Can you tell us a bit more about your progression within the store?
'I first started at the store in 2014 for a week’s worth of work experience. I’ve been coming back to work in the holidays when I’m home from university and I’m currently undertaking my summer placement which has been so interesting. I’ll be starting full time next summer once I’ve graduated from university and I can’t wait.'
Have you always lived in Newbury?
'Yes – I have lived here all my life.'
How did you start your career at Specsavers?
'I’ve always been interested in eye care and I began working here as part of my work experience and that confirmed my aspiration to be an optometrist.'
Do you have a favourite style of frame?
'There are too many to choose from. I’m fairly short sighted so I tend to wear contact lenses rather than specs.'
What’s the best part of your job?
'I love that I get to meet a variety of new patients every single day and it’s amazing to work with such a friendly group of colleagues. I’m learning so much from them that I can use in the future as an optometrist.'
What do you do outside of work?
'It’s mostly spent with friends and family or at the gym to make sure I keep fit and active.'
