Michael O’Kane, store director of Specsavers Morningside has been named as a finalist in the Optometrist of the Year category for the Association of Optometrists (AOP) Awards in London in January.
The AOP Awards recognise the highest levels of achievement in UK optics and attracted over 20,000 votes from both optical professionals and patients last year.
Michael is one of three finalists in the category, and the only optician in Scotland in the running for the award. He was selected for the passion and professionalism he displays.
The Morningside store boasts top of the range optical and audio technology - following a £250,000 investment in 2017 - and delivers clinical care in a friendly, family oriented practice – including an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) 3D scanner, a suite of Specialist Dry Eye Clinic and OrthoKeratology as well as myopia control; the latest development in optometry.
The OCT 3D eye scanning technology, also found in hospital eye departments, produces a structural scan of the eye, including layers of the eye that would not normally be visible using traditional eye testing techniques. The results are similar to an ultrasound or MRI scan.
It is used for a variety of functions, including early detection, screening and management of conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
A word from the store director
Michael said: ‘I’m really honoured and flattered to be nominated for this award. It’s been an incredible year and I’m delighted to been shortlisted out of all the other optometrists in the UK.
‘It’s been so heart-warming to see my patients come in specifically to sign their name on the nominations sheet and congratulate me for being shortlisted. I’m really grateful to everyone who nominated me and those of you who have voted for me. I’ve been in Morningside for 10 years now and I feel part of the community.’
Michael also recently won the highly coveted Optometrist of the Year 2018 at the UK Optician Awards, The NHS Scotland Optometrist Award and his Morningside store scooped the Opticians Award, “Technology Practice of the Year 2018”.
Paul Morris, director of professional advancement at Specsavers, added: ‘We are very proud of the four Specsavers short-listed candidates in the AOP Awards. This is a huge honour and recognition of optometrists’ commitment to delivering the highest standard of clinical eye care. With voting now open please take the time to view the categories and read supporting statements for all candidates.’
