On World Down’s Syndrome Day (Tuesday 21 March) Specsavers in Mexborough is highlighting the importance of having regular eye tests to detect potentially sight threatening conditions for people with Down’s syndrome.

Awareness is important

Specsavers in Mexborough is supporting the Down’s Syndrome Association in a bid to raise awareness of the condition.

People with Down’s syndrome will have a learning disability and certain health issues, including visual impairment, can be more common in people with the condition.

Eyesight can be impacted

Store director Andy Bryer says: ‘People with Down’s syndrome are more likely to have problems with their eyesight; the condition may impact upon the development of vision.

'Even if they wear glasses the quality of their vision can still be impaired. Specsavers recommends that all children and adults should have regular eye checks.’

A vital cause

A spokesperson for the Down’s Syndrome Association added: ‘We are delighted that Specsavers in Mexborough is supporting the Down’s Syndrome Association.

'People with Down’s syndrome of all ages are more likely to have visual impairment and many people will have to wear glasses throughout their lives. Having the support of Specsavers will highlight these important issues.’
