Two members of staff from Specsavers in Market Harborough made a special visit to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) to hand over money raised by their fundraising efforts.

Store director Barry Henning and contact lens optician David Pell visited the DLRAA crew at their East Midlands Airport base and presented them with a cheque for more than £1,364.

Staff at the store have dedicated their fundraising efforts to raising money for the DLRAA Helicopter Emergency Medical Service team that attend many different medical emergencies every day of the year across the East Midlands.

Motorcyle accident drives fundraising

David Pell said: ‘I had a motorcycle accident in the summer of 2007 when I fell off my bike after driving down some very muddy deserted country lanes and broke my leg. I’d been exploring an area I didn’t know very well so when I called for an ambulance I hadn’t been able to give them my location. After 45 minutes they hadn’t been able to find me so they got the local air ambulance service out to look for me and they quickly came to my rescue.

‘I’m very grateful for the help they gave me and feel the service they provide to the community is incredibly important.’

Barry Henning said: ‘David suggested that we support DLRAA and the rest of the team thought it was a brilliant idea. We had great fun organising different activities in store last year to raise money and our customers also gave generously, we’re really pleased to have made this donation.’
