To mark World Glaucoma Week (11-18 March), the whole team at Specsavers in Ludlow opticians have up-skilled to better support customers with the condition.

Highly trained team

In conjunction with the International Glaucoma Association, Specsavers has developed training to assist sufferers with their treatment. Specifically, they will be advising on how to effectively administer eye drops, which are crucial for managing the condition.

Rebecca Lewis, store supervisor at Specsavers in Ludlow, says: ‘All staff have completed the training. We understand how serious glaucoma can be and we often hear our customers talk about their difficulties, so we were especially keen to get involved.’

The optometrists at Specsavers in Ludlow have also completed post graduate studies in glaucoma. Nicola Aubrey, Darren Smith and Tarek Higgi now hold the College of Optometrists Professional Certificate in Glaucoma.

Nicola says: ‘We are proud to be involved in supporting the International Glaucoma Association. The training shows the significance the store places on the early detection of glaucoma and the positive impact this has on reducing avoidable sight loss for our customers. The store already offers eye health clinics in Glaucoma Referral Refinement so the next step was improving the awareness and skills of our retail and optical staff.’

Customer’s story

A Specsavers Ludlow customer is sharing his story to highlight the importance of regular eye tests and thanking the team of highly-qualified optometrists. Malcolm Wragg, aged 59, is keen to spread the word about how important it is to have regular sight tests.

Malcolm had no family history of glaucoma and was diagnosed in his late 20s. ‘I’ve lived with glaucoma for about 30 years now and I’ve never had any pain or field of vision problems,’ says Malcolm. ‘I want to share that with the help of Specsavers, glaucoma can be identified and managed before it has a serious effect to your sight.’

‘I now visit Specsavers in Ludlow where I get my eyes and pressure checked on a regular basis. The puff test is so quick and simple, and I would urge everyone to have one done, even if you don’t wear glasses or contact lenses.’
