Specsavers in Lowestoft hosted a spectacular series of fundraising events in aid of sight loss charity the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) during National Eye Health Week.

Fun for all the family

The store took part in a sponsored 5k cycle, a dotty day with all staff dressing up in return for donations, and a children’s colouring competition where the three winners were awarded with cinema tickets, play centre tickets and book tokens. 

Other events took place across the week including a mega raffle featuring prizes from businesses all over town, including photoshoots, cinema tickets, meal vouchers and designer glasses worth up to £125.

Helping to fight avoidable sight loss

The fundraising initiative came as part of National Eye Health Week to raise awareness of the importance of eye health and the need for regular sight tests.

The fundraising drive coincided with the launch of a new report by Specsavers and the RNIB, which revealed that one in five people will live with sight loss in their lifetime despite at least half of all cases being avoidable . 

Store director David Holcombe, said: ‘Our report showed that 78% of people said sight was the sense they fear losing most compared to the next most popular sense, smell (8%), followed by hearing (7%).

‘We’re hoping our events in store along with the generous donations of our customers and other locals will help to fight avoidable sight loss. Thank you to all of those who donated and helped us to support the cause.’
