Did you know that glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible sight loss? That is according to Specsavers and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).
But what exactly is glaucoma? And are you at risk? David Holcombe, store director at Specsavers Lowestoft in London Road North, explains.
Am I at risk of getting glaucoma?
Yes. We all are. While it tends to affect older people, or those from certain high risk groups, anyone can get glaucoma at any time. That is why regular eye tests are so important as it can be hard to detect before it has already damaged your sight.
Surely I would know if I had a problem with my vision?
You would think so, but that is not always the case. Glaucoma can be entirely symptom free at an early stage – so by the time you notice that anything is wrong, your sight could already have been damaged.
Can glaucoma be cured?
No, but it can be managed – normally through the regular use of special eye drops, although other treatments are available if those are not effective. But sight lost before it is identified has been lost for good, hence why we recommend regular eye tests.
