Whiteness Primary School beat stiff competition from other local schools to clinch the Top School Trophy at a recent carpet bowls event in Lerwick.
The competition is the grand finale of an annual bowling initiative with Active Schools Scotland, Lerwick Bowling Club and sponsor Specsavers.
Members of Lerwick bowling club visit local primary schools to coach children in carpet bowling, with all participants encouraged to attend the Top School competition. More than 280 pupils participated in the bowls sessions across 17 schools this year which is a new record for the coaching programme.
Support from Specsavers
The coaching sessions are financially supported by Specsavers in Lerwick which covers the travel costs for all the coaches to visit each school across remote locations. The opticians on Commercial Street also purchased a new set of bowls for the coaches this season.
Colin Campbell from Specsavers attended the competition to present the runners up with medals at the first prize trophy to Whiteness Primary.
Engaging young kids in sport
Thomas Bruin, store director at Specsavers Lerwick, said: ‘We are proud to support this initiative and Active Schools’ work in the community, the bowls coaching has been hugely successful in engaging young kids in the sport.
‘Congratulations to all involved for another great year with a special well done to the pupils at Whiteness Primary.’
