Active Schools Scotland has received backing from Specsavers Lerwick to boost its bowling initiative with local schools.
Members of Lerwick bowling club, with the support of Active Schools and sponsor Specsavers, have been visiting local primary schools to coach children in carpet bowling.
The coaching sessions are financially supported by Specsavers in Lerwick who cover the travel costs for all the coaches to visit each school across remote locations. The opticians on Commercial Street also purchased a new set of bowls for the coaches this season.
Louise Johnson, Active Schools Manager, said: ‘Our team have been visiting schools to offer coaching sessions for six years and have been thrilled at the response from schools and teachers each year. It is a real delight to see the kids playing and improving every week.
‘We are extremely grateful to Specsavers for supporting the bowling programme, the sessions couldn’t go ahead without their input – a big thank you from all of us.’
The course is offered each year to primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils of any local school that signs up. More than 280 pupils are participating in the bowls sessions across 17 schools which makes 2018 a record year for the coaching programme.
Each school receives at least four sessions from qualified bowling coaches, and pupils are welcome to participate in weekend junior coaching sessions at Clickimin Leisure Centre. All schools are also encouraged to enter a team to the ‘Top School’ bowling competition on Wednesday 28 March 2018 at Gilbertson Park Games Hall, Lerwick.
Proud to show support
Thomas Bruin, store director at Specsavers Lerwick, said, ‘The bowls coaching sessions and inter-school competition have grown in popularity over the past few years and have been hugely successful in engaging young kids in the sport.
‘We are proud to support this initiative and Active Schools’ work in the community.’
