The one hour weekly sessions kicked off in October and lead up to a district ‘Top School’ competition in March.

Highlight of the season

John Jarmson, area coach in Shetland, said: ‘We have been visiting schools to offer coaching sessions for six years and have been thrilled at the response from schools and teachers each year.

‘It is a real delight to see the kids playing and improving every week. It is also rewarding to see children with additional support needs, who have perhaps struggled with sports in the past, playing bowls so fantastically.

‘We were so pleased to see almost fifty boys and girls participating in our latest Top School competition, it really is the highlight of our season.’

Supported by Specsavers Lerwick

The coaching sessions are financially supported by Specsavers in Lerwick who cover the travel costs for all the coaches to visit each school.

John said: ‘Many of the schools we visit are remote so we are very grateful for the support from Specsavers as the sessions couldn’t go ahead without their input. I’d also like to thank Active Schools who ensure we have enough carpets at each of our sessions and competitions.’

Thomas Bruin, store director at Specsavers Lerwick said, ‘The bowls coaching sessions and inter-school competition have grown in popularity over the past few years and have been hugely successful in engaging young kids in the sport.

‘We are proud to support Lerwick Bowling club and its work in the community. We hope the coaching programme will be as big a success next season.’
