Dispensing assistant Anthony van Mellearts is working towards becoming the new dispensing optician at Specsavers Leigh-on-Sea.
The 28-year-old from Basildon will complete his CERT 3 qualification this month before beginning his CERT 4 course, and hopes to apply for university in September to start his dispensing optician course.
An interesting career path
Anthony said: ‘I used to work in retail for a major supermarket chain and when they opened an opticians I decided to move over to optics. After three years there I realised this was a career path that really interested me, but, unfortunately, there was no opportunity for progression.
‘When Specsavers opened in Leigh-on-Sea I saw the chance to develop my career with them and I’m really looking forward to setting myself some new challenges and learning more skills.’
New challenges and skills
If accepted onto the course in September, Anthony will study for a further two years while working at the store to gain experience.
He has already learnt a lot about customer service and interaction, as well as the physical aspects of glasses, from the engineering of lenses and frames, to how to repair and adjust them.
In his spare time Anthony enjoys rock and heavy metal music and has a passion for science fiction, both in films and books.
